OptoLum Continues Ascent in Highly Competitive Solid-State Lighting Industry with Issuance of Third Key Thermal Management Patent

January 12, 2005… Trio of thermal management patents establishes OptoLum as a clear leader in the future of Solid-State Lighting and completes the ThermoLum? technology portfolio for licensing

Phoenix, Arizona USA ? OptoLum, Inc., a leader in the rapidly developing Solid-State Lighting industry, today announced that it has again been awarded a patent that significantly extends the company?s broad coverage as granted in its original core patent on thermal management of light emitting diodes.

U.S. Patent #6,831,303, which was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on December 14, 2004 is yet another of OptoLum?s major breakthroughs in thermal management of solid-state lighting systems. The 303 patent covers LEDs integrated with heat sinks in a variety of standard configurations and materials including aluminum extrusions. The 303 patent notably includes the addition of active cooling either using air or liquid by way of a fan or a pump and allows for cooling of the brightest of LEDs packaged in small spaces or in densely packed arrays.

The 303 patent allows LEDs to continue their march into ever brighter applications such as general lighting by providing a technology platform that keeps the LEDs in their temperature comfort zone. As a result of the high brightness products made possible by OptoLum and the ThermoLum? technology portfolio, the future holds greater efficiency and longevity for high brightness LED applications ranging from aviation, marine, and architectural lighting to medical devices and machine vision.

According to President and CEO, Joel Dry, ?OptoLum is excited about the more efficient future made possible by the ThermoLum? technology portfolio and will offer ThermoLum? for licensure to technologists and manufacturers around the world who are running up against the considerable thermal constraints of today?s LEDs. For our friends and associates that need a turnkey solution, OptoLum offers a range of products for architectural and marine illumination and also works with our customers to engineer thermally optimized custom solid state lighting devices ranging from light engines to complete light fixtures.?
